Pink Pages
Society is changing and as global communication has taken off, so has a social revolution, bringing us a more diverse and interesting society to live in.
Lawyers should be at the forefront of social change, ensuring that the law is adapting to meet the needs of the people it regulates. Sadly, this doesn’t always happen.
Foot Anstey is different. We recognise and embrace diversity and we don’t have preconceived ideas about our clients needs – you instruct us and it’s our job to find the solution which is best for you.
Our Living Together team is a group of lawyers specialising in the areas of law which impact on people who live together, whether it is as a couple or as friends or family members and irrespective of sexual orientation.
Living Together at Plymouth Pride
The Living Together team attended Plymouth Pride in 2008 at Plymouth Guildhall.
The team held a legal advice workshop covering any legal issues affecting the gay, lesbian and transsexual community including advice on civil partnerships, cohabiting, inheritance and next of kin.
The team also had a Living Together stand in the Main Hall throughout the day to answer any questions or provide information and advice. There was also the opportunity to win a champagne balloon ride for two!
The team were looking to redress some common misconceptions about the rights gay and lesbian couples have.
For example, did you know?
- You do not get legal rights just by living with someone.
- If you buy a house together, it doesn’t have to be in equal shares.
- Gay couples can adopt, foster and have children through surrogacy.
- You can have a civil partnership giving you the same rights as married couples.
- If you have a civil partnership, you won’t automatically get half of your partner’s assets.
- Living together does not give you the right to inherit from each other.
- Next of kin has no legal meaning – if you want to make financial and medical decisions for each other, you need a lasting power of attorney.
If you want to discuss any of these issues in more detail, or find out what you can do to protect yourself, and your partner, please use the enquiry facility below.
